Tyrian purple (aka Royal purple or Imperial purple) is a dye extracted from the murex shellfish
which was first produced by the Phoenician city of Tyre in the Bronze Age. Its difficulty of manufacture, striking purple to red color range, and resistance to fading made clothing dyed using Tyrian purple highly desirable and expensive.  Alexander wore a purple cape and Senators wore a broad purple stripe on their togas while Equestrians wore a thin purple strip on their togas.   The Emperor could wear wore purple togas, tunics and robes.  This purple crest signifies that the wearing was of high rank being either a Senatorial Tribune or Legatus.
